I've taken way too long to update this thing so I'm just gonna write a lot more casually. Like you read everything I write anyways these things have been novels lol.
Café de la Paix: Had lunch with Ben and his grandma here after econ one day. It's right next to L'Opéra and was so nice!! *Thank you Grandma Salzman you are a wonderful lady* Had chicken with this mushroom/cheese type paté - Ben and I couldn't really tell what it was but it was yummy. Had an Opéra for dessert (cause fitting). If you didn't know it's a chocolate and coffee flavored cake (some of my favorite things). Still determined to try every type of French pastry so this was a step in the right direction.
Paris Fashion Week: Didn't really do anything for this but I gotta mention it. There were tents set up in the Tuilieries Gardens and basically all over Paris. Lots of fashionable people about. Tried to sneak in to some tents but to no avail :( No new model friends.
L'Orangerie: Went here with Natalie and Ben one Monday afternoon to see Monet's water lillies (Les Nymphéas). They truly are amazing. They're huge and beautiful and wonderfully curated. They're shown in two large circular rooms with the water lillies surrounding you on the walls. The lighting is soft and not too intense. Very peaceful. Makes me definitely want to go to see Giverny (where he painted all the water lillies). Monet is probably my favorite artist so I ate this up.
Nelly Julien: During orientation we received a list of the best boulangeries in Paris and this was on it. It is also on my street so Natalie and I have been meaning to go since day 1. We finally went and I gotta say the croissant was pretty dang good. They warmed it up for us - perfect for the rainy day we were having.
Had a reception/presentation for an old dean of Fuqua who was visiting Paris at EDUCO this week too. Cool to meet some Parisian Duke Alum who were at the event and EDUCO catered it so of course there were tons of elegant hors d'oeuvres. But not much to report other than that haha, learned a bit about interest rates.
Bagelstein: This is a bagel sandwich chain in Paris (as you probably could have guessed). It's right near Paris 7 and Natalie and I had been eyeing it for a while. Finally went in and I actually really liked it. They have lots of different kinds of bagels and cookies and milkshakes and they put out yummy samples at lunchtime. The bagel was sufficiently stuffed, probably the closest you'll get to a New York bagel in Paris. A little kitchy and fun. They also advertise it as a place for healthy eating and there was a sign that says "weight watchers eats here" which is a LOL because in America no one would ever call a bagel healthy. They also had wifi which is always a plus.
Vins et Terroir: Natalie and I went here for dinner one Wednesday after a very long day of class... It's a super cute very french restaurant in the Odéon area that is actually very reasonably French. It was the most classic french place I've been so far so I really went for it on the food. I got a duck foie gras tart to start and fish as my entrée - which turned out to be a whole fish, head and all on a plate. I was a little overwhelmed to say the least but I think it was good? Still distracted by the head. However, by the time dessert came around I had cleared my mind and had the best dessert I've had yet abroad. We had a speculos cheesecake with raspberry sorbet and a chocolate macaron with hazelnut ice cream. Unreal.
UFO: Met Liv and Evan here for drinks one night. Fun quirky little bar in the Oberkampf area. Kind of reminds me of a nerdy teenage boy's room turned night club. Cool unique place to grab a drink and hang out, and was reasonably priced.
Coutume Café: Went here again to study. Really cool trendy yada yada but I had DANK eggs benedict. They were poached eggs on top of PANCAKES with GUACAMOLE! Like what? Mind blown. Must have again.
Thursday night we all went to Liz's apartment in the 16th to have our own little dinner party. It was SO fun. We all helped cook and had a little salad to start, followed by coq au vin (which turned out to be much more complicated than expected... we improvised a bit but Ina pulled through). Oh we also accidentally boiled our vodka instead of water when we were making chicken broth. So we almost made "coq au vodka" lol close call. Sorry Liv I still owe you a bottle..... Following our surprisingly delicious coq au vin we had a cheese course which 3 delectable cheeses specially picked by Evan. (Evan's host parents own a restaurant so they gave him very specific instructions on what cheeses to buy). Then Liv made some awesome chocolate chip cookies for dessert! We sat at the dinner table for hours just talking and laughing and drinking wine. Ended up being my latest night in Paris and we never even left the house. Great food, great wine, even better company :)
